Circle of Hope

Brain Tumour Research:
The funds from Meagan's Walk have gone to many wonderful projects through b.r.a.i.n.child to the Hospital for Sick Children.
Brain tumours are the leading cause of death in children under the age of 20 years old. Common symptoms of a brain tumour include the following:
  • headaches, vomiting or nausea (often in morning and then subsiding)
  • vision problems, lack of coordination, seizures
  • handwriting and school performance get worse gradually
  • weakness or loss of feeling in parts of the body
  • changes to the senses of hearing or smelling
  • changes in personality or memory
1. The Forget Me Not Program is a program, whereby a flower arrangement is sent to bereaved parents on the first anniversary of their child's death. The program sends a message of hope to these families, as they know their child remains in the hearts of b.r.a.i.n.child and the staff at the SickKids-$600

2. Neuro-imaging and Neuro cognitive late effects of Post fossa tumours- the research done through this project offers new insight into the effects of surgery and treatments on children with post fossa tumour. Having a better understanding of the effects allows SickKids staff an opportunity to ensure the supports and service are in place to help these children and their families cope and succeed-$76,250

3. Vascularity & Angiogenesis in optic pathway/hypothalamic gliomas-$15,500

4. Follow-up care for children with brain tumours-This study helped the staff at SickKids review the various appointments and follow-ups needed for these children. They were then able to look at how to streamline hospital visits and care-$12,804

5. Equipment needed to set up the first Angiogenesis Research Centre at The Sunnybrook Hospital-$28,957

6. MRI review in ependymoma-$5,750

7. Beyond Mutism: Motor Speech Disruption in children with post fossa brain tumours-the research being done in this study will help build a better understanding of how speech in children with these tumours is affected after surgery. The information retrieved will allow staff to create new ways to help these children communicate with their parents and families when they are unable to talk-$39,000

8. Prognostic significance of chromosome IQ gains in pediatric ependymoma- $12,500

9. Antibiodies against platelet derived growth factor study -$5,066

10. A study of investigating the genetic make-up of brain tumour stem cells-$8,800

11. Screening multiple novel prognostic markers in Medulloblastoma-$29,650

12. Weekly vinblastine for low-grade glioma: review of the pilot study- $5,140

13. Ependymoma-vascularity & angiogenesis as independent predictors of patient outcomes-$15,325

14. Improving communication during palliative care of children with tumours-learning from experience. The research from this project will benefit children who are dying of a brain tumour and their families. As the tumour grows these children may no longer be able to talk. This project will provide ideas to help these children communicate and express themselves-$49,592

15. Surrogate Markers of Tumour Angiogenesis in Children with Brain Tumours-$93,440

16. Notch Signaling and the regulation of Brain Tumour Stem Cell Function-$5,000

17. Finding the “true” cancer stem cell in human brain tumours-$20,000

18. Characterization of Amplified Genes in Paediatric Posterior Fossa Ependymoma-$14,875

19. Connections Project for Bereaved Families of Ontario-$21,500

20. Improving the communication during the palliative care of children with brain tumours- learning from experience - $28,190

21. Creation of a Novel Transgenic Mouse Model of Ependymoma- $35,875

22. Establishment of a comprehensive genetic bank for children with brain tumours- $20,100

23. Quantitive Real Time PCR Machines - $35,285

24. Genetics of paediatric brain stem gliomas - $19,342
